Grin Affair @ 505D Bishan Street 11

Grin Affair is a little cafe that mainly focuses on the art of cakes in a jar. This is actually their second outlet, with their first over at Everton Park. Over at Grin Affair, they have a variety of jar cakes, with up to 14 different flavours for you to choose from. The menu for their second outlet has been reworked to include both savoury & sweet meringue waffles as well.

Their second outlet over at Bishan resides in a little space in the residential neighbourhood. (It’s quite close to the nearby CPF building.) While I have not been to their original outlet, the interior decor of the second outlet seems to be quite similar to their first. (Judging by photos I’ve seen.)

There is a common element of mid-dark wooden furniture with some light wood shelves on the walls that display knick knacks for sale. The whole cafe is actually quite small, with only a few seats that span the left & right side of the walls of the interior. The place also adopted an open concept, where the kitchen is in plain sight for all to see. (You can actually hear the sizzle of waffles while waiting.) The one most noteworthy part of the place – the huge apex ceiling.

Food
If you have ever been to Grin Affair’s Everton Park outlet, you’ll know by now that they specialize in jar cakes, those cute little glass jars that contain delicious & sweet desserts inside. They have about 14 jar cake flavours here, with a few depending on season. Their second establishment over at Bishan have even expanded their menu to include meringue waffles. Initially, they offered only savoury waffles, with fillings ranging from slow roasted chicken to smoked salmon. It was only recently that they further expanded their menu to include dessert waffles that come with different toppings & gelato.

Prices here are fairly low, with waffles under the 10 dollar mark. The only thing that I considered to be slightly pricey is their jar cakes, which can go for about $6 a pop. Perhaps the reasoning for the price is to add in the cost of the jar itself; which you can actually take home with you. I’m not sure if it’s still ongoing, but the last time I went, I was told that you could return the jars in exchange for stickers; achieve up to 12 stickers to get a free jar cake. Anyway, you won’t find GST or service fees here either, so hurrah!

Latte ($4) The latte here was pretty good & nicely brewed. Their latest menu included more varieties of latte, ranging from chocolate, peanut to matcha & toffee. I'm quite tempted to give them a try actually.

Lychee Passion Jar Cake ($6.50) Hazelnut Jar Cake ($6.50) Grin Affair's pièce de résistance - Cakes in jars! It was definitely quite hard to choose from over 14 different flavours & it all bides down to your own personal preferences. The cakes here are made of consistent layers of cream & cake. I really loved the flavours of the Lychee Passion, with a nice salty combination from the sea salt pistachio that went perfectly with the lychee mousse & vanilla cake. The Hazelnut on the other hand, seemed a tad too dry for my liking. The flavours were quite nice though, but I would have liked more of a cream ratio.

Slow Roasted Chicken with Bacon & Maple Cream Waffle ($7.50) I had this during the first day opening of Grin Affair & back then it was actually $6.50. I also think that they have recently improved on their meringue waffle recipe. Nonetheless, when I first had this, I thought it was great. I really like the taste & texture of the meringue waffle. The quantity of roasted chicken was quite superb as well & it paired off extremely well with the bacon & maple cream. (BACON. MAPLE. CREAM. Three beautiful words.)

Honey Lavender Jar Cake ($6) Of course, all those jar cakes are just too mesmerizing that you can't leave without bringing home one. The Honey Lavender flavour was quite delicious as well. A nice hint of both honey & lavender with a few added blueberries. I still think that 6 bucks for a small jar of cake seems to be a stretch, but currently it's the norm price for every one I've come across so far. (Not just Grin Affair.)

Cookie Crumbs & Maple Cream Cheese Waffle with Peanut Butter & Earl Grey Gelato ($9 + $3 for additional scoop of gelato) I was actually looking for something more savoury during my second visit to Grin Affair, however, I just couldn't pass up their newest addition to the menu - Dessert Waffles! As always, I like to add an additional gelato. (Cos I'm Such A Fatty, duh. I kid.) The staff recommended that I go for their Earl Grey gelato that was special for that day, so I did. This was just.... SOOOO good. Seriously, I was extremely glad that I decided to give their dessert waffle a try. The waffle was perfectly cooked, soft with a slight hint of crispyness. The peanut butter & Earl Grey gelato were of fantastic quality & complemented the waffle extremely well. To top it all off? Cookie crumbs & peanut brittle which gave the waffle a slight yet wonderful salty kick. I must say I was quite impressed, considering how I'm at that stage where I'm starting to loathe waffles. I'm definitely heading back for more soon enough! Highly recommended! (Perhaps they should add some jam/jellies on it to make it PB & J.)

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
It’s really nice that Bishan is finally getting to see some additions of cafes in the area & Grin Affair seems to be a fantastic start to all of it. I’m quite glad that they decided to spruce up their menu by adding a variety of savoury & dessert waffles. (You can only go so far with jar cakes. Right?) The place is really fantastic & quiet for doing a bit of studying or chatting with friends over coffee, cakes & waffles. I’m definitely gonna bring my friends over sometime to give them a try if we’re ever nearby.
