"Cool, smooth, Italian."

“Cool, smooth, Italian.”

plus39 gelato bar; as you already tell by its name, specializes in the delicious frozen dessert that is.. well, gelato of course. Considered to be the first live gelato concept of Asia Pacific, plus39 gelato bar focuses on using 100% natural ingredients which are both locally sourced & imported from Italy. The gelato here is made fresh every day, ensuring its consistency & quality.

Aesthetic
The first thing that came to mind when I first walked into plus39 gelato bar was “Classy”. Sorry kids, this ain’t your neighbourhood ice-cream shop. I really liked the interior decor, it was a mixture of class & elegance intertwined with a rawness that balanced it all out. The storefront itself was quite eye-catching, with a dark wood signboard with motifs of a bull’s head. The brick wall on the inside of the bar makes for great photo-taking opportunities. (Foodies & Instagrammers, get your cameras ready.)

The IdeaTre high-tech machine from Carpigiani, where goodness awaits! (One downside is that there are no names listed for the gelato on display & hence both Chef Stefano himself and the staff had to keep repeating the current flavours being offered for the day whenever customers walked in.)

Food
The key to plus39 gelato bar is the use of all-natural ingredients, keeping their gelato free of any artificial colouring, preservatives or additives. Due to using 100% natural ingredients, the gelato here is made fresh every day and what you end up with is one of the smoothest yet lightest gelato you can find around these parts. One thing to note is that their use of natural ingredients is apparent as the gelato here can melt quite quickly. (That’s a good thing though, alarm bells should ring if it doesn’t melt at all.)

Fortunately, plus39 gelato bar serves their gelato in pre-frozen cups upon order, so you still have some time to do your photo-taking before it really starts to melt.

One unfortunate fact about plus39 gelato bar is that it’s one of the more pricier establishments, especially for gelato. One small cup/scoop can go for about $7.50, which is quite high for gelato. Nonetheless, you are paying a premium for quality, so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Coppa Two Scoops ($9.50) Chocolate Ginger, Pistachio Having heard good things about the pistachio flavour here, it was a no-brainer to try it. It tasted really good with a nice flavour of pistachio. The gelato here is also quite smooth & light, as I've already mentioned earlier. You can pretty much eat 10 scoops & not feel bloated. My companion; who is a lover of chocolate, loved the chocolate ginger flavour.

Frozen Cocktail ($13.50) "Strawberry Amaretto" was their frozen cocktail for the day. I just knew I had to order it. (Though I'm not a fan of liquor, as I've said before, put them in food & I'm SOLD.) This was really really delicious. The sweetness of the strawberry sorbet balanced out the slight bitterness of the amaretto. This was basically the highlight of the day. (I had this in the mid-afternoon... don't judge me.)

I'll like to make a special mention for awesome metal cups that they use to serve the gelato in. Fancy. They are also pre-chilled to reduce the melting point of time of your gelato.

Coppa Three Scoops ($11.50) Being my greedy self, I decided to order the rest of the flavours offered for the day. (Do not judge me.) Here's strawberry sorbet, chocolate liquor & hazelnut. All three flavours were as fantastic as the previous ones I've had. My one gripe is that the scoops tend to run kinda small; a few bites & gone.

plus39 gelato bar was also one of the many gelato artisans to take part in the Gelato World Tour 2015. The flavour that they entered was called "Loving Date", an interesting combination of tofu, Tahina, dates & Balsamic vinegar of Modena jelly.

Artwork on the walls of the interior. They seem to be reminiscent of smeared/melted gelato flavours. Neat.

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
I’m not sure why, but I actually quite like the whole concept of plus39 gelato bar. The gelato here is definitely of a high standard & quality with a freshness that can’t be beat. Located near the CBD area, the place seems to be geared towards the working adults of the office districts. The price does get to me, but then again, it’s a price to pay for quality. I will say this though, plus39 gelato bar seems like an extremely fantastic place to bring your date to.
