Merely Ice-cream @ 91 Bencoolen Street

"Don’t be mistaken, we make delicious ice-cream!"

“Don’t be mistaken, we make delicious ice-cream!”

Merely Ice-cream is an ice-cream parlour located in the building of Sunshine Plaza. The place has been a staple for art students & nearby office workers to get their ice-cream fix. Merely at times can be quite nondescript, lurking around the corner of the plaza; one blink and you could miss it. Of course, the crowds still flock to the parlour for their delicious handcrafted/artisan ice-creams.

Aesthetic
Not much can be said about Merely’s decor. While the use of crate boxes for tables are quite unique, the interior can get quite gloomy from the grey walls & floors. One of the most glaring faults here is the ceiling that retained it’s office-like quality. Another omission of design was the stockroom at the back, with only a short partition to separate it & the world. Perhaps the focus here is on the ice-cream & not on the decor. (The less the cost, the better the ice-cream?)

Food
The key to Merely is definitely their ice-cream, which is made without the use of artificial flavouring and colouring. (Au natural as they say.) As they are so confident with their naturally-made ice-creams, they even disclose the ingredients used for each flavour.

One interesting thing to note is that Merely uses a “French-style” method of creating ice-cream, by using egg yolks as natural emulsifier. I believe that this is possibly the reason why the texture of Merely’s ice-cream is more “crumbly” rather than smooth. Of course, the saving grace is the unique variation of flavours they offer that you can’t find anywhere else. Root Beer Float? White Chocolate Speculoos? Nutty Beer? Yes, yes, yes please!

Another thing that makes Merely so popular, would have to be their affordable prices. Not only does each scoop costs around 3 bucks, but the quantity per scoop is also quite respectable. No GST or service fees here either.

Waffle with ice-cream ($2.80 for waffle, around $10 for four scoops of ice-cream) Here we have Earl Grey, Nutty Beer, Bailey's Coffee & Red Velvet. If you've seen my previous ice-cream waffle reviews, I will usually order no less than three scoops of ice-cream. (Yes, I'm cray cray.) The waffle here is pretty alright. It's quite basic & not as fantastic as perhaps Rabbit Owl Depot. I did love the ice-cream flavours; Nutty Beer possibly being my favourite. Bailey's was awesome as well. (I notice that I have a thing for alcoholic ice-cream flavours, though I don't drink. Irony.)

Raspberry & Yuzu Sorbet ($3.30 for a scoop) My friend & I chose to hangout & do some work at Merely, hence we decided to order more ice-cream. (Not only to try more flavours but also because I started feeling guilty for hogging their seats. I'm the sort of person that detests people like that and I wasn't going to turn into one of them.) Great, strong flavours as usual. Though their ice-creams aren't as smooth, as mentioned earlier, they are still quite delicious & they tend to melt nicely in the mouth. (Get your head outta the gutter.)

Grape Yakult Sorbet ($3.30 per scoop) This flavour appeared later in the day to replace a sold out one. It was so intriguing that we decided to order a last scoop of ice-cream after having six previously. (Yes, we are cray cray. I tend to do that to people who follow me to cafes & parlours alike.)

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
While Merely Ice-cream isn’t as fancy or well-known as something like Creamier, what I like about the place is their fantastic unique flavours, their no frills commitment to the creation of their frozen desserts & the affordability. Sure, the decor isn’t much, but the focus is on their ice-creams & ice-creams only. Their constant change of interesting & intriguing flavours will always keep me going back for more. (Especially since it’s so convenient for the nearby art students at NAFA & LASALLE.)
