Merely Ice-cream is an ice-cream parlour located in the building of Sunshine Plaza. The place has been a staple for art students & nearby office workers to get their ice-cream fix. Merely at times can be quite nondescript, lurking around the corner of the plaza; one blink and you could miss it. Of course, the crowds still flock to the parlour for their delicious handcrafted/artisan ice-creams.
Not much can be said about Merely’s decor. While the use of crate boxes for tables are quite unique, the interior can get quite gloomy from the grey walls & floors. One of the most glaring faults here is the ceiling that retained it’s office-like quality. Another omission of design was the stockroom at the back, with only a short partition to separate it & the world. Perhaps the focus here is on the ice-cream & not on the decor. (The less the cost, the better the ice-cream?)
The key to Merely is definitely their ice-cream, which is made without the use of artificial flavouring and colouring. (Au natural as they say.) As they are so confident with their naturally-made ice-creams, they even disclose the ingredients used for each flavour.
One interesting thing to note is that Merely uses a “French-style” method of creating ice-cream, by using egg yolks as natural emulsifier. I believe that this is possibly the reason why the texture of Merely’s ice-cream is more “crumbly” rather than smooth. Of course, the saving grace is the unique variation of flavours they offer that you can’t find anywhere else. Root Beer Float? White Chocolate Speculoos? Nutty Beer? Yes, yes, yes please!
Another thing that makes Merely so popular, would have to be their affordable prices. Not only does each scoop costs around 3 bucks, but the quantity per scoop is also quite respectable. No GST or service fees here either.
Worth A Visit/Revisit?
While Merely Ice-cream isn’t as fancy or well-known as something like Creamier, what I like about the place is their fantastic unique flavours, their no frills commitment to the creation of their frozen desserts & the affordability. Sure, the decor isn’t much, but the focus is on their ice-creams & ice-creams only. Their constant change of interesting & intriguing flavours will always keep me going back for more. (Especially since it’s so convenient for the nearby art students at NAFA & LASALLE.)
