“Hello. We’re Butter Studio and we bake.”
Butter Studio is a Halal-certified bakery/cafe that’s located along Jalan Besar. The place started out with a small shop in Changi Airport but have expanded to a full-fledged cafe with their outlet in Jalan Besar. Butter Studio has actually been around for more than a year now & is quite popular among the Muslim community that relies on them for their delicious bakes & pastries.
Inside Butter Studio.
“My heart’s a stereo.”
The interior of Butter Studio is quite an eclectic mix of vintage & modern. With wooden counters, some chalkboard menus on the wall & a majority of white used in the cafe which gives off a very homely vibe. It’s also quite close to what you’ll normally see in Kinfolk magazines & the like. (Close but not entirely like those minimal hipster decor-yada-yada that you see in those spreads.)
Do you ever feel like a tart?
Macarons & some cakes.
(If you spell them with a double O, please just… stahp.)
Brunch & Dinner menu of Butter Studio.
Great handwritten chalkboard menu on the wall.
The main draw of Butter Studio, as you can clearly see from above, would have to be their whole range of delectable & colourful cupcakes. Apart from them, the place also offers signature tarts, freshly baked cakes; some of them even come in jars. With their main cafe in Jalan Besar, they have also expanded into the brunch/dinner fare, with a small menu of items offered for each.
Prices here are pretty average, with their desserts are priced similarly to most other bakeries & cafes. Their brunch/dinner menu on the other hand tends to be higher, with mains hovering around 15 bucks. No GST or service fees here though.
Lychee Mint Iced Tea ($6)
One of my friends had this & though it was pretty nice. 6 bucks though… meh.
Butter Studio’s Hearty Breakfast ($16)
Sunny Side-Up, Hashbrowns, Chipotle Sausages, Pancakes, Maple Walnut Butter, Maple Syrup
I decided to give this a try as their Eggs Benny were not available that day.
Though the dish was quite simple & straightforward, it worked quite well & I actually liked it quite a bit. Pancakes were delicious & not too filling. (They were pretty small anyway.) Overall, while I did like the dish, the price just doesn’t do it for me.
Cajun Chicken Burger ($14)
Another one of my friends ordered this and mentioned that it was pretty good. I do find it interesting how they separated the chicken & egg from the burger.
Lemon Meringue Tart ($7.90)
These just looked really pretty that it caught the eye of both my friend & I. It tasted fantastic as well. You can’t go wrong with lemon meringue, you just can’t.
Sea Salt Caramel Red Velvet (Think it was around $7.90)
This was one of Butter Studio’s most popular choices amongst their whole range of desserts.
Normally I find Red Velvet cakes only aesthetically pleasing as they often tend to end up being dry. The one here wasn’t though, as the cake was nicely complemented with the caramel sauce. This was one of the things that everyone agreed was really good.
Chocolate Cheesecake ($7.90)
As we were sharing the red velvet cake, one of my friends decided to try something else instead & chose this. She quite liked it, along with a few other friends of mine who gave it a try. Smooth & chocolaty.
Cupcakes (One for $3.50, Three for $10)
Over The Rainbow, Chocolate Mint, Lavender, Rose, Nutella
There were just too many cupcakes to choose from! Luckily, we were in a pretty big group, coupled with their “Buy 3 get 1 free” promotion, allowed us to try basically ALL their cupcakes. (Almost all*)
The cupcakes here were great as they were quite light & fluffy. The icing on top were mostly of the buttercream variation. While personally, I’m not one for buttercream frosting, but the ones here were quite good.
(Funny story: One of my friends tried the Lavender cupcake & commented “Tastes like flowers.” Commence face palm.)
Milo Choc Chip, Over The Rainbow, Candyland, Cookie & Cream, Nutella, Red Velvet, Marshmallows
I do like how varied the flavours of the cupcakes here are, with a pinkish Rose & a dirty brownish-purple for their Lavender. Each cupcake is nicely decorated & quite easy on the eyes as well.
Overall though, most of my friends thought that the cupcakes here were pretty alright but nothing THAT special. It was basically a mix bag. Half of them wouldn’t mind coming back to try more items, while the other half felt that they tried it all & it wasn’t worth the trip again.
“Share the taste of home.”
Worth A Visit/Revisit?
Butter Studio is definitely a great Halal bakery which offers a nice range of cakes & desserts. (The amount of likes of their Facebook page is pretty staggering.) I do have to agree with some of my friends who felt that the food wasn’t that special enough to garner another revisit. While I do find that the cupcakes here are quite good, it’s difficult to compare to the numerous other cupcake stores around. (My personal preference is definitely leaning more towards a certain Halal cupcake shop along Jalan Pisang.) If you haven’t tried Butter Studio though, it’s worth trying at least once. They also seem to have improved since my visit, so there’s that.
