“Bringing the love of Amsterdam back home.”
I am… is a Halal cafe situated along North Bridge Road with influences from Europe; particularly Amsterdam. The name of the place actually derived from Amsterdam’s city icon – “I amsterdam”. The place has been quite iconic along the Haji Lane area & you won’t miss the eye-catching replica sign of “I am” (without the “sterdam”). I am… has been one of the more popular Halal cafes in Singapore, with great food that keeps the continuous crowds coming.
Inside the cafe.
Nice mural of Amsterdam on the wall.
The basis of the cafe is designed mostly towards European roots, with a huge mural of Amsterdam painted on one of the walls of the cafe. The place is open air, with half of the seating of the cafe situated along the corridors of the shophouse it resides in. Wooden elements, hanging lamps & metal shelves bring the whole look together. (If I’m not mistaken, I think they have also recently expanded to the building on the opposite side of their “I am” sign.)
Cakes! Look at those multi-layered cakes!
Food menu of I am…
The food that I am… offers are mostly of Western cuisine mixed with a little Asian Fusion. Their mains include a wide array of burgers, with a selection of pastas & pizzas as well. There is a good variety of food choices here, with quite a number of seafood starters. The desserts here are quite popular as well, with a rainbow cake that will catch the eye of people passing by.
Mint Chocolate ($5.50)
A friend of mine had this and commented that it was pretty nice, though the taste of mint wasn’t as prominent as he would have liked.
Citrus-based Concoction, Orange Slices, Pineapple Juice, Mint
Labeled as one of their most popular drinks, this was a pretty great thirst quencher. I liked it, not to mention that the price isn’t as horrid as some other places.
I am… The Platters ($18.90)
Garlic Butter Prawns, Mussels, Soft Shell Crab, Hot Wings, Battered Squid Rings
It was a relief that I am… offered a platter mix of their starters; there were too many to choose from… all of which I wanted to try.
This platter is just right for a party of 3, no more, no less. Every item in the platter were pretty delicious. Prawns? Yum. Mussels? Good. Soft Shell Crab? Hell yes. Wing? Good. Squid? Yes please.
You definitely won’t go wrong ordering the platter if you’re looking to try an array of starters without hurting your wallet. (So much anyway…)
Juicy Beef Burger ($13.90)
Beef Patty, Pineapple, Onions, Melted Cheese
One of my friends had this & thought it was great. I do think that some added greens or a tomato in there would make the whole dish LOOK slightly more pleasing. (Or would that affect the taste….. hmmmm.)
Cajun-Spiced Chicken Burger ($13.90)
You can see what I’m talking about with the greens & tomato here. Doesn’t this burger look much more aesthetically pleasing? (Okay, I’m nitpicking.)
Anyway, another one of my friends ordered this, he also thought the burger was pretty good, though the chicken had the tendency to be dry at times. The Cajun spices were superb.
Fish ‘N’ Chips ($15.90)
Battered Dory, Signature Fries
I’ve constantly seen this dish of I am… on Instagram & so I just had to order it. Love the presentation, looks fantastic ain’t it?
Taste-wise, it was quite good as well. Nice slight crunch to the batter, dory was fresh & tender. Overall, one of the better Fish & Chips I’ve had.
Rainbow Cake ($8.90)
Now this was one of the things that caught my eye the few times I’ve passed I am…. Ever since, I’ve made a mental note of the place & made sure to try their awesome looking rainbow cake soon.
Finally, I’ve managed to try it. Unfortunately of course, the main drawback of rainbow cakes is that while they are aesthetically pleasing, the taste leave much to be desired. It’s basically your run-of-the-mill layered sponge cake with frosting. Nothing special. Nothing fancy. Only a sight for sore eyes.
(Some of my friends & I also discussed about how nice it would have been if the different layers of sponge had a different flavour to each colour. Hmm….)
Rainbow Mille Crepe Cake ($8.90)
Now their Mille Crepe cake fared much better than their Rainbow Cake. (In terms of taste anyway.)
It does also look pretty awesome, but this time the taste matches the aesthetic of the cake. It was pretty enough that a passerby stopped & asked what it was. It’s also interesting to note that the cream layers in-between each crepe has a division between normal cream & chocolate cream.
S’Mores Tart ($8.90)
Anything with the word S’Mores in it will always make my heart stop for a second. The tart was really delicious, a fantastic mix of chocolate & toasted marshmallows on top. (“Please sir, can I have sum’more?”)
Matcha Latte ($5)
Chai Tea Latte ($5)
Classic Hot Chocolate ($5)
Three of my friends came to join us a while later & ordered some drinks. (You didn’t think I’m THAT nuts to order so many drinks, did you? Did you?!?)
One of them ordered the Chai Tea Latte, took a taste & melted into a puddle of water on the spot. She swears it was THAT good. It still haunts her till this day. (In a good way of course.)
Worth A Visit/Revisit?
I am… is definitely a place to try out. The crowds are a testament to their popularity & their good food. Not to mention it’s pretty much one of the better Halal cafes in Singapore that offers such an array of Western dishes to choose from. I really like the slight Amsterdam vibe the place has as well & it’s a great place to chill out after a walk around Haji Lane.
