“A little cake shop in an old neighbourhood with big dreams.”

Maple & Market is a cake shop that’s located in the Cassia Crescent neighbourhood. The shop is actually a short distance away from Dakota Crescent & also a nearby cafe, The Hideout. The place specializes in cakes, cakes, cakes & bakes. They even offer baking classes, with a small area of their kitchen space allocated for them.

Aesthetic
The whole look of the inside of Maple & Market reminded me of something you would see in those little bake shops in America, kinda like you just walked into Martha Stewart’s kitchen. The whole place is filled with vintage wooden furniture, white panels & lots of plants for decoration. There’s even an old sewing table where you can enjoy your cakes on. Part of the entire space is devoted to the baking area/kitchen, where classes are also taught.

Food
As mentioned earlier, Maple & Market specializes in cakes & bakes. You’ll be spoilt for choice just by looking at the many different cakes they have for sale; which can also be ordered for birthdays, parties & the like. The cakes are usually on a rotation basis, with only a few of their signature creations on their permanent menu, one of which is the 1919, a Gula Melaka cake. They do also offer a menu of waffles & some coffee.

Prices for their cakes are pretty affordable, with a slice being around $6. Considering that some other places charge up to 9 bucks a slice, this is literally a piece of cake. No GST & service fees either. (Hurrah.)

Ice Butterscotch Latte ($4) This was pretty good, though the butterscotch flavor was not as prominent as I would have liked. Also, I kinda felt stupid for ordering something sweet to go along with the numerous sweet cakes that we were about to indulge in.

Though, I felt kinda felt stupid for ordering something sweet to go along with the numerous sweet cakes that we were about to indulge in. Sweet & sweet will cancel each other out. Usually.

Maple & Bacon ($4.50) On top Cinnamon Tea Cake Maple & bacon..... goodness. Two of my favourite things combined together. This was pretty delicious. Maple syrup? Awesome. Bacon? Love it. Of course, once the bacon was gone, the appeal of the cake lowered. One of my friends kept commenting that the bacon was gone & there was no point eating the cake anymore. (The same one who asked me to choose the biggest & best looking bacon when we ordered the cake.)

1919 - Gula Melaka Cake, Kaya Frosting, Caramelized Almonds ($6) Blossom - Rose Cake, Raspberry Frosting, Caramelized Pistachios ($6) Their 1919 cake was seriously "da bomb". It was extremely sweet but extremely delicious. The ironic thing was that I actually had the cake before over at Assembly Ground, not knowing it was from Maple & Market. The Blossom cake was also pretty delicious. Lovely colour, perfect raspberry frosting. This is one of their signatures as well.

Buttercup - Root Beer Chocolate Cake, Pistachio Frosting ($6) Lemon Meringue Cake ($6) Buttercup was quite an interesting flavoured cake. Root beer! Who could say no to that? It tasted pretty alright, there was a hint of root beer in it. Perhaps they should make it go with Root Beer frosting... Lemon Meringue was fantastic. It had a slight sour kick to it. I've been a fan of all things lemon meringue recently, it's my new favourite flavor. The sweetness of the meringue frosting balanced the sourness of the lemon cake perfectly.

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
Overall, I really like the cakes of Maple & Market. The flavors here are all pretty unique & their cakes have quite the perfect cream-to-cake ratio. They’re all so popular that they even supply their cakes to various other cafes, such as Assembly Ground & even Shop Wonderland. Of course, if you are a foodie/cafehopper, it’s best to head directly to the source. Definitely worth a visit.
