The Fabulous Baker Boy @ The Foothills, 70 River Valley Road

“Fab Food By Fab People!”

The Fabulous Baker Boy is a bakery cafe that is located at the foothills of Fort Canning Park. The place is conveniently tucked away from the hustle & bustle of the nearby Clarke Quay area as the cafe is situated in a standalone building in the midst of all the greenery. One of the main draws of The Fabulous Baker Boy would have to be their wide range of cakes that are baked in-house. The cakes are baked by Chef Juwanda Hashim and they are known for being the classic layered-style cake while being soft & retaining moisture.

Aesthetic
The building where the cafe resides in used to be the cateria & shower area of the River Valley Swimming Complex but it has since been converted. The cafe also recently renovated to keep the dining area air-conditioned; a extremely important consideration when you factor in Singapore’s hot weather. The exterior of the cafe is surrounding by lush greenery, sculptures & park benches, being situated on the foothills of Fort Canning Park. On the inside, the columns & floors seem to retain the original tiling of the old swimming complex. The interior decor is kept quite simple, with white walls, light wooden tables & chairs and inspirational quotes strewn about.

Perhaps the two most prominent features of the place is their in-house bakery; where you can usually see “Ju” himself layering cakes and whipping up frosting. The second feature would be their cake display, a large array of choices housed under glass cake stands that would leave you in awe.

Food
As you can tell by their name by now, The Fabulous Baker Boy is best known for their cakes, cakes & cakes. Their array of choices is quite impressive & it seems to be one of the most extensive that I have seen so far. Of course, along with their wide range of cakes, they also have a substantial brunch & dinner menu. Here you can find your usual Eggs Benedict, pancakes and even pot pies. There are some vegetarian options as well & some dishes have an Asian fusion, such as “Tata’s Chicken Curry”.

Prices for The Fabulous Baker Boy are a mixture of average & above average pricing. The downside is that they do charge service fees & GST as well, perhaps due to their location. This can make trying a wide range of their food more pricey, so it’s best to go in a group if you’re looking to try multiple dishes & cakes.

Fab Egg Benedict ($16.50) Toasted Brioche, Smoked Salmon, Rosemary Potatoes, Italian Hollandaise What I found so interesting about the Eggs Benedict from The Fabulous Baker Boy is the shape of the poached eggs. They probably used a device to easily poached eggs. (Perhaps "cheat" in a way?) Overall, the dish was pretty good. Presentation seemed a bit lackluster, a small handful of greens would have brought the entire dish up a notch & make it more worth the price. (It's all an illusion really.)

Chilli Crab Mac & Cheese ($18.50) Cheesy Bechamel, Chilli Crab Meat, Herbed Panko I'll say it. When this was first served, the quantity was really underwhelming for the price. I'm also usually not a fan of Mac & Cheese as many places are unable to find the right balance for it. Taste-wise, it was pretty alright. It was more wet than I would have preferred it to be, definitely needed more cheese to balance it out. Good amount of crab meat though.

TFBB Champion Breakfast ($24) Toasted Brioche, Rosemary Potatoes, Garlic Mushrooms, Chicken Sausages, Beef Bacon My friend had this and he mentioned that it was really good. This definitely looked slightly better than my Fab Eggs Benedict. He really liked the beef bacon but of course the one thing that go to him was... the price.

Big Lub's Carrot Cake ($8.50) The whole array of cakes that they offer definitely threw my friend & I off as we couldn't decide on what to try. There were just too many choices! We ended up slowly eliminating those we didn't want to try & decided to go for the cakes that were deemed more popular. Among them was the carrot cake. It was delicious. Lovely outer layer of shredded coconut, perfect balance of cake to cream layers.

Red Velvet ($9) Another one of their more popular cakes, the Red Velvet. They also have a butter cream variation rather than chocolate. This is consider to be a "Customers' Fave". It was definitely good. I was weary from the look of the overwhelming layers of the cake as I thought it could end up dry, but I was wrong. The cake was nice & moist, perfect cocoa flavor and a beautiful maroon red.

Salted Caramel ($8) My friend was a fanatic of all things Salted Caramel, and hence this was one of our "Locked" choices. We both liked it a lot, it was also as moist as all the other cakes & it had salted caramel sauce gushing out in-between the layers of the cake.

Green Tea Praline ($7.50) Wanting to add some colour into the mix, I decided to try their Green Tea Praline cake as well. I originally wanted to try their Blueberry Lemon Yogurt or Strawberry cake but they were unavailable that day unfortunately. This cake taste great as well. Nice hint of green tea. My friend & I found it to be a bit tougher in texture compared to the other cakes which made us wonder whether it had gone stale. I had it packed for takeaway as we couldn't finish it and when I had it the next day, the cake was softer this time. Just something that we noticed.

Apple Cider ($8.50) Another delicious cake. Great apple cider flavour, cake was soft & moist. As good as the rest. TFBB's cakes are all very well done and are pretty much equally fantastic.

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
If you asked me what was my favourite cake from The Fabulous Baker Boy, I would be stumped. They are all equally delicious & great and it all comes down to your personal preference regarding flavors. They have definitely got the whole layered cake formula perfect. Their brunch offerings are pretty good as well, though I do think their prices are a bit too high, which makes trying more of their dishes/cakes difficult if you are on a tight budget. The cafe is a fantastic place to chill out during a lazy afternoon as well, since the installation of air-conditioning in the place. Of course, they are extremely popular over the weekends, so take note of that as the crowds could get a bit crazy. (Do also note that they are NOT Halal certified.)
