Chock Full of Beans is a quaint little cafe in Changi Village that is highly known for it’s cute yet fantastic 2D/3D latte art. The cafe has been around for quite some time already, building a reputation on those coveted latte arts, which has become a source of joy & popularity for customers who visit Chock.
As you can see in the interior photo above, the seats inside the cafe is extremely limited with the majority of the cafe’s seating being alfresco. The decor inside the cafe is very modern, with brick walls & wooden panels. The colour palette of the place is quite reminiscent of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.
Wooden patio furniture fill the alfresco seating area outside, including a high table & high stools. It may not look like it in the day, but it’s a popular hangout spot for people to enjoy beer during the night. Even though Chock is located quite far from the major residential areas & the best way there is by car, it’s still very popular and constantly packed with people from all over who come just for their 3D art.
The cafe makes use of the same digital queue system as GRUB, Symmetry & Lola’s Cafe. The place can get really crowded, especially during the weekends which makes the system really useful. Just key in your details & wait for a notification on your phone. (I do like to note that it seems to retain your personal information if you have previously entered it at another cafe that uses the same system. Seems kind of like an invasion of privacy.)
I’ve actually read another review beforehand that mentioned the onslaught of mosquitoes you would face if you sat outside. He was not wrong. During my visit, I sat right next to the bushes & got bitten around 3-4 times by those pests. (Prepare thy repellents! You have been forewarned.)
Chock Full of Beans offers up your usual all-day breakfast/brunch fanfare. The extensive menu consists of dishes such as the typical Eggs Benedict & big breakfasts to sandwiches & salads. They also have french toast, waffles & a small selection of desserts. I must say that I was actually surprised by the quality of the food at Chock, it was much better than I had expected. Of course, being a place known for it’s lavish latte art, their drinks menu is also as extensive.
Prices for Chock are considerably towards the higher average, with mains hovering around the 15 dollar mark. The place was one of the few that didn’t charge service fees or GST a while back, but they have now began to charge GST unfortunately.
Service/3D Latte Art
With all good things, there comes a price. As popularity of Chock’s latte art grew, their ability to keep up with the demand started to waver, with many customers dissatisfied from not being able to get a 3D latte art, especially since the cafe is known for it. I do sympathise with the baristas who do their best to keep up with the demand. I count myself lucky for having an extremely positive experience at Chock.
If you’re interested in their latte art, do call before heading down to avoid being disappointed. They have since limit to one 3D art per table, especially during peak hours. Do note that you would need to specifically request for a 3D latte art during your order & that it’s probably only for iced lattes. Of course, if you are as meticulous as me, you can even specially request a certain latte art you would prefer. I did that to avoid any disappointments & was highly impressed with the staff for being patient and being able to accept my requests even though it was a crowded weekend. [I do admit that I may have come off sounding a bit too abrasive because of this and I do apologize to the staff.]
Worth A Visit/Revisit?
Though initially I was quite weary of my visit to Chock, I left feeling extremely satisfied & really impressed. I highly recommend a visit for their wonderful latte art & 3D art. Of course, do take the steps I’ve mentioned above in order to avoid disappointment. Great food, fantastic service. I’m very keen on going back for more 3D art & to try more of their food.
