Platypus Lobster Shack @ 3 Pickering Street

The lobster shack.

The lobster shack.

Platypus Lobster Shack is a casual restaurant that is situated along Nankin Row. Their focus is on lobster rolls with a menu that features around 9 different lobster roll flavours. The lobster shack is one of the many outlets under the Platypus brand, with other restaurants in Bugis Junction & Raffles Place.

Aesthetic
Platypus’ opens as a gourmet food bar during the day, (aka. Platypus Gourmet2Go) serving up gourmet lunch boxes for the working crowd. They only operate their lobster shack in the night, for dinner service.

The place is actually quite small, with more alfresco seating outside. The place is nicely decorated with homely furniture with bright warm lighting. They make do with what limited space they have, which is nice. Part of their kitchen is in the seating area of the restaurant itself, allowing you to see how the lobster rolls are made as well as the many rolls which the chefs churned out for the dinner crowd.

Reservations
I initially made a reservation for the sake of making one. I actually felt that there probably wasn’t a need to do so. Boy, was I glad I did though. During my visit, the staff had to constantly turn away streams of walk-in customers as the place was fully booked. So if you are looking to try their delicious rolls, best to make a reservation beforehand! They are getting extremely popular.

Food
As stated earlier, Platypus Lobster Shack specializes in delicious lobster rolls. The two main ingredients of the restaurant are Boston Lobsters & Sea Urchins. The place only recently launched their lobster menu, after perfecting their recipe for the rolls. Along with an extensive list of lobster rolls, they also offer some small plates/starters, including the highly addictive & highly popular “Crustacean Bowl”. It is so good that it is limited to around 10-12 bowls per day!

Prices for their lobster rolls are actually one of the most affordable I’ve come across so far. Their rolls are only around the 20 dollar mark! Hence, if you had previously read my review on another lobster place, Pince & Pints, and felt sad because you couldn’t afford their prices, do not fret anymore!

Service
I got really fantastic service from Platypus. The staff were really friendly, even when there was some confusion when I enquired about their latest creation that I saw on Facebook, the “Sea Urchin Tagliatelle”, which was supposedly launched on the day of my visit. However, it was actually on the new menu, which was to be launched the following week. The staff went to ask the chef about it and eventually they managed to make the dish for me – FOC! They even offered a free dessert at the end of the meal! I was definitely extremely impressed, lost for words even.

Crustacean Bowl ($19) Uni Creme, Butter-poached Lobster, Japonica Rice, Honey Ponzu, Caviar, Char-grilled Cheddar Cheese, Sesame, Chervil This was simply.. divine! Awfully delicious, it's like a party in your mouth with every bite. No wonder it's only limited to a few bowls a day. IT'S TOO GOOD! Highly recommended, do head over early to secure your bowl! They are also offering a main version of the dish that goes for $26 on their latest menu after customer feedback. I'll definitely go back for a main version of this soon!

Sea Urchin Tagliatelle (Normally $18) Sea Urchin Zabaione, Egg-yolk Tagliatelle, Smoked Garlic, Caviar This is one of their latest creations that's on the latest menu. It was also really good! Delicious & creamy. Had to slurp up every last bit of caviar & cream. Another dish that is a must-try at Platypus.

The Traditional ($22 for set, comes with a salad & truffle crisps) Butter-poached Lobster, Roasted-garlic Mayo, Chives, Sea Salt Of course, how can you go to Platypus Lobster Shack without trying their lobster rolls?! My companion had the Traditional while I had the Modern. She did state that she preferred the roll from Pince & Pints. Of course, that's subjective as it's double in price and I find that Platypus' lobster rolls are just as good to satisfy your lobster craving. [It's a lesser blow to your wallet as well!]

The Modern ($22 for a set) Butter-poached Lobster, Hollandaise, Marinated Garlic, Lemon Zest, Chillies, Grana Boni Cheese, Chervil I do find that Platypus' lobster rolls are really good in their own right. The bread for the roll is soft & buttery on the inside with a nice slight crisp on the outside from being toasted. It's really delicious and considering the price, the roll still has a substantial amount of lobster meat that threatens to ooze out from every bite. The side salad & truffle crisps are a nice complement to the delicious roll as well.

Caramel Croissant Pudding ($10) Vanilla Custard, Organic Eggs, Croissant, Vanilla Bean Creme A nice way to end off the meal, this was a pretty nice dessert. Warm & soft pudding on the inside, sort of melts in your mouth a bit. The croissant on the outer part of the dessert tasted great with the vanilla bean creme. The whole dessert was really rich. Unfortunately I was pretty full from the small plates & rolls that I couldn’t finish this!

The Grandmother Cake (Normally $10) Pine Nuts, Lemon Cream, Toasted Almonds, Grandmotherly Love This was given to us FOC from the lovely staff at Platypus! This was another great dessert. I loved the lemon cream of the cake, which was slightly chilled. Overall, it was really delicious & sweet.

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
Craving for lobsters but don’t want to break the bank? Platypus Lobster Shack is the place for you. With really delicious small plates & highly affordable yet fantastic lobster rolls and great service, I highly recommend a visit to Platypus. Of course, do remember to make a reservation beforehand as they’re getting extremely popular! [They even recently added Saturday to their opening days to curb demand.] I’m definitely going back soon for more rolls & the coveted “Crustacean Bowl”!

  2. I didn’t see the Uni pasta!! Looks good. Try the garlic one next time if you go, that was reallyyy tasty too!

    1. I definitely will! I would love to head back soon! The pasta was a recent addition a while back, not sure if they still have it or not, but if they do, you should definitely try it!
