My Awesome Cafe is a cafe along Telok Ayer that is situated in the old Chung Hwa Free Clinic. It’s one of the cafes that adds to the latest trend to hit Singapore, which is to turn an old building into a modern cafe while retaining it’s historical significance.
One of the people who started My Awesome Cafe is Franck Hardy. He, along with a few entrepreneurial friends from various backgrounds, created the cafe. Stemming from a similar passion, which is to create a place where the food is good, where the deco is innovative & where the customers can feel “awesome” just by hanging out at the cafe.
The whole look of My Awesome Cafe is very vintage industrial-chic. Unfinished walls of grey, hints of black add to the look of the place. Old-school style wall fans make the place feel more like the piece of history it resides in – the Chung Hwa Free Clinic. The place has a really nice laid-back vibe, even constantly attracting passers-by due to the ambience & aesthetic.
Some of the furniture in My Awesome Cafe are upcycled, such as the hanging lights above which make use of old pipes. Even the large tables near the front of the cafe & at the back are made from recycled wooden doors, with large heavy pipes as the supports. The stools that accompany these huge tables also make use of the same heavy pipes for their legs. (Franck Hardy himself came over and joked that they were great as gym weights.)
My Awesome Cafe’s offers up all-day breakfast type dishes. From croissants, quiches, granola, scrambled eggs to extensive variety of salads & sandwiches. The focus here is on the freshness & quality of the ingredients. Even their baked goods are made every morning by the kitchen staff instead of going with suppliers. The food is served in vintage amber glassware that ties together with the whole aesthetic of the place.
Prices for My Awesome Cafe ranges towards the average to the higher average mark. Their salads & sandwiches are higher prices, but perhaps it is due it them being more of the mains of the cafe. Unfortunately, they do charge service fees & GST. (Though my friends & I felt kinda fooled by the menu, which states that “Prices exclude service fees & GST”. It’s just for the prices in the menu however.)
There have been quite a number of negative reviews regarding their service but fortunately for me, my visit was a pleasant one. The staff were quite friendly, even Franck Hardy himself came up to talk to me, explaining the origin of the huge tables in the cafe and also asking to have a look at my photographs when he spotted me taking photos of their food. Of course, I recommend going to the cafe during an off-peak hour when the crowd was scarce like I did.
Worth A Visit/Revisit?
I do really like My Awesome Cafe. The unique locale of the place & the look of the exterior makes it worth a visit. The food is pretty good as well. What I like about the place is the laid-back yet relaxed vibe you get from hanging out at the cafe. (Of course, like many other cafes, it’s best to go during off-peak hours.) I would probably go back & try some of their sandwiches if I’m ever in the area again.
