My Awesome Cafe is a cafe along Telok Ayer that is situated in the old Chung Hwa Free Clinic. It’s one of the cafes that adds to the latest trend to hit Singapore, which is to turn an old building into a modern cafe while retaining it’s historical significance.

One of the people who started My Awesome Cafe is Franck Hardy. He, along with a few entrepreneurial friends from various backgrounds, created the cafe. Stemming from a similar passion, which is to create a place where the food is good, where the deco is innovative & where the customers can feel “awesome” just by hanging out at the cafe.

Aesthetic
The whole look of My Awesome Cafe is very vintage industrial-chic. Unfinished walls of grey, hints of black add to the look of the place. Old-school style wall fans make the place feel more like the piece of history it resides in – the Chung Hwa Free Clinic. The place has a really nice laid-back vibe, even constantly attracting passers-by due to the ambience & aesthetic.

Some of the furniture in My Awesome Cafe are upcycled, such as the hanging lights above which make use of old pipes. Even the large tables near the front of the cafe & at the back are made from recycled wooden doors, with large heavy pipes as the supports. The stools that accompany these huge tables also make use of the same heavy pipes for their legs. (Franck Hardy himself came over and joked that they were great as gym weights.)

Food
My Awesome Cafe’s offers up all-day breakfast type dishes. From croissants, quiches, granola, scrambled eggs to extensive variety of salads & sandwiches. The focus here is on the freshness & quality of the ingredients. Even their baked goods are made every morning by the kitchen staff instead of going with suppliers. The food is served in vintage amber glassware that ties together with the whole aesthetic of the place.

Prices for My Awesome Cafe ranges towards the average to the higher average mark. Their salads & sandwiches are higher prices, but perhaps it is due it them being more of the mains of the cafe. Unfortunately, they do charge service fees & GST. (Though my friends & I felt kinda fooled by the menu, which states that “Prices exclude service fees & GST”. It’s just for the prices in the menu however.)

Service
There have been quite a number of negative reviews regarding their service but fortunately for me, my visit was a pleasant one. The staff were quite friendly, even Franck Hardy himself came up to talk to me, explaining the origin of the huge tables in the cafe and also asking to have a look at my photographs when he spotted me taking photos of their food. Of course, I recommend going to the cafe during an off-peak hour when the crowd was scarce like I did.

Home-made Organic Hibiscus Soda ($5) This was recommended to me by the staff. It wasn't bad, though it did lack a bit in the taste department. Is it because Hibiscus doesn't have much taste? Perhaps. Still, it's a nice drink for a hot day. I do like the glass jar it was served it.

My Awesome Salad ($15) Mesclun Salad, Smoked Salmon, Herbs, Chicken Breast, Duck Rillettes, Avocado, Tomato My friend had heard of the cafe before & being the healthy eater he is, planned to order the My Awesome Salad before we even arrived at the cafe. When it was served, both my friends & I were definitely impressed. That is one AWESOME salad. Probably one of the only times a salad looked so good. It was overloaded with toppings, which was awesome. Tasted great too. This is definitely THE thing to order at My Awesome Cafe.

Quiche 1/4 + Salad ($9.50) I've seen their quiche on some other reviews for My Awesome Cafe & really wanted to try it., especially since you hardly see quiche around these parts. I actually quite liked it, it was tasty & had pieces of smoked salmon inside. My friends on the other hand, thought it was somewhat dry. It was also, a bit overly charred on top, sadly. [I also noticed that they did away with the 1/8 option, which was what I originally planned to order as I didn't want such a big piece.]

Croissant + Scrambled Eggs + Parma Ham ($9.50) I've read good things about their croissants as well and also decided to try it. Did it live up to expectations? Most definitely. The croissant was one of the best I've had. Soft & buttery, flaky with a nice slight crisp on the outside. It was delicious. The generous proportion of Parma Ham was also fantastic. Scrambled eggs were pretty alright.

Dessert of the Day ($5) Pineapple Upside Down Cake This was another dish that I've read good things about. It was really delicious. The cake was soft & moist with sweet pineapples on top. The coconut milk was a nice complement. Another must-try at My Awesome Cafe. [This is not displayed at their dessert counter, so best to ask the staff beforehand for availability.]

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
I do really like My Awesome Cafe. The unique locale of the place & the look of the exterior makes it worth a visit. The food is pretty good as well. What I like about the place is the laid-back yet relaxed vibe you get from hanging out at the cafe. (Of course, like many other cafes, it’s best to go during off-peak hours.) I would probably go back & try some of their sandwiches if I’m ever in the area again.
