Shrove Tuesday is a little cafe/dessert place in the middle of the residential area of Toa Payoh Lorong 4. Even though “Shrove Tuesday” is widely known as “Pancake Day”, you won’t find any pancakes here but delicious ice-cream, waffles, coffee & other home-made desserts. Shrove Tuesday is a hidden jem, just opening early this year. News about them has already spread and their popularity has started to grow.
As described in the paragraph, Shrove Tuesday falls on a day before Lent, a period before Easter. Hence Shrove Tuesday’s decor makes use of Easter as inspiration. Bright orange is painted on one part of the wall, colourful potted plants, teacups & knick-knacks are used as decor. Some hints of the Easter Bunny are placed here and there. White faux brick walls used for the counter & artificial grass for a very outdoorsy feel. I quite like the abstract ceiling light feature and their use of interesting quotes around the place. Such as “Waffles Don’t Judge, Waffles Understand” (So true) and another on the door towards the bathroom “Business Big Or Small, What You Seek Lies Behind This Door”. Though it’s simple, it’s all very fun & quirky, a little titbit you can spot while looking around the place.
Their seating area is also quite small with wooden tables and small stools for seats. They do have another area behind the counter with a larger table, more private or for larger groups. The place is definitely slightly bigger than Creamier. Shrove is located in the midst of a residential area, thus I would think only people who live nearby or through the whole of mouth (or blog), would know about the place. Of course, Shrove has been gaining popularity and there are times when the place can be packed.
Shrove offers a variety of desserts, ranging from home-made ice-cream, macarons, pies, brownies, waffles and their special home-made ice-cream bars. Along with desserts, Shrove also offers coffee from high quality 100% organic Arabica coffee beans. (I’ve yet to try as I’m not much of a coffee person). Unfortunately, as they are still quite new, their hot food menu is still unavailable, though I think you won’t miss much as they seem to be focused on their desserts. They do serve a few pies as well, either an Apple Pie or if you want something savoury, Chicken Pie. Prices for their desserts range from average to above average but they don’t charge GST or service charge, so that’s a bonus.
Worth A Visit/Revisit?
I do really like Shrove Tuesday. It’s a hidden jem within the Toa Payoh Lorong 4 residential estate. I highly recommend a visit to Shrove, they serve great ice-cream & waffles and it’s a great place to relax. It’s situated near the food market, so you can head to Shrove after for dessert. Or if you’re at Creamier and it’s too crowded, Shrove is just around a 10minute walk away. I would definitely go back again for their ice-cream, even their waffles (which says something as I’m getting sick of waffles).
