Tanuki Raw is a bar & restaurant in Orchard Central best known for their Happy Hour. They serve Japanese inspired tapas food, with modern creative sushi rolls, sashimi platters, fried food & rice bowls. Tanuki is most famous for their fresh raw oysters that can go for 2 bucks a piece during Happy Hour. It’s no wonder Tanuki is a favourite after-work hangout place for working adults.

Aesthetic
The whole look of Tanuki seems very inspired by Japanese fish markets. Concrete counters, dim yellow lighting from vintage hanging lamps, metal framed urban chairs. It all ties in very nicely to what Tanuki is all about, which is mostly fresh raw food & raw oysters. There is also a outdoor area to Tanuki, where you can enjoy the scenery of Orchard Road during the night (or day) while enjoying a drink. I went to Tanuki at around 5pm, when their Happy Hour just started. When I left and walked around Orchard Central, I passed by Tanuki again at around 6.30pm and it was filled to the brim with people. So definitely best to go early before the work crowd gets in.

Food
Tanuki Raw is best known for their Happy Hour. Anyone and everyone who has gone to Tanuki Raw will definitely mention their Happy Hour, which is 5pm to 8pm daily. This is when you can get fresh raw oysters at only 2 bucks each with any alcoholic drink you order. (Half a dozen oysters for every one alcoholic drink.) Quite a steal. Their oysters are REALLY fresh, anyone who doesn’t really like them should try Tanuki’s. I’m usually the type that isn’t such a fan of raw oysters, but Tanuki’s really blew me away with its freshness. Highly recommended! I would have gone for a dozen. (Of course eating raw shellfish is never something 100% safe, so take note. I was slightly weary because of the other reviews I’ve read that state negative comments because they had bad shellfish. Luckily I did not have a bad experience.)

If raw oysters aren’t your forte, Tanuki also has a wide array of Japanese rolls, rice bowls & their own creative modern inspired bites such as the “Steak Tartar”. You can have a little gander at what else Tanuki serves on their menu here.

Fresh Raw Oysters ($2 Each, with an alcoholic drink ordered) These were from Fanny Bay, Canada. Apart from these $2 oysters, they also have other oysters from different countries such as France which are slightly higher priced. Really loved these. They were really fresh. Even someone who isn't an oyster fan will enjoy these.

Apple Martini ($10) I'm not such an alcohol drinker and this was my first time trying an Apple Martini. I found it to be quite strong, it was the first time I felt a burning sensation in my stomach from consuming alcohol. (Even had to ask my friend if it was normal. Yes, I hardly drink!)

Salmon Sashimi ($7) You can also get 5 slices of salmon sashimi with an alcoholic drink ordered. They were quite fresh, but I would think 7 bucks for 5 slices... not really worth it. (You can definitely get a better deal elsewhere.)

Steak Tartar ($21) Minced Raw Australian Beef, Sake-Poached Fuji Apples, Wasabi Mayo, Mustard, Truffle Salt I was very impressed with the presentation of this dish. My first time trying Steak Tartar as well. Eating raw oysters was fine by me, but raw steak? Made me a tad weary, but I've always wanted to try. So I did. Turned out really good. The taste of the sauces with the raw beef & the fried bread slices was divine. The raw beef was also really fresh & it didn't seem weird to me after eating.

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
Tanuki is definitely a place that is a must to visit during their Happy Hour. If you enjoy fresh raw oysters, alcoholic drinks/martinis or really good Japanese food, this is the place for you. It’s a great hangout spot for the working adult or with friends. Prices for their food is quite above average, though they are of pretty good quality & they are served with great presentation. I would think of Tanuki’s as more of a place to enjoy a drink with the occasional tapas to share, and not a place to eat a proper meal. (Unless you go during the day and order their rice bowls.) I would love to go back to Tanuki again for their Happy Hour oysters, I have been wanting to go back since my first visit.
