GRUB is a bistro located in the middle of Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. It’s situated in a stand-alone building, surrounded by the lush greenery and constantly attracting a crowd with it’s unique location, food & fun environment.
Of the three times that I’ve been to GRUB, I’ve only stepped into the interior of GRUB on my third visit. Unless you are lucky or early, you’ll find that GRUB is constantly filled with people and getting a seat on the inside would be quite the task. GRUB utilises the same digital reservation system as Lola’s & Symmetry, so all you need is to key in your particulars and wait for them to contact you when your table is ready. It would usually take around 10-20 minutes to get a table at GRUB, sometimes you would need to share a table with others as well.
The popularity of GRUB seems to come from it’s location. Being situated in the middle of a park, surrounded by lush greenery, GRUB constantly draws a crowd even though it’s location makes it quite out of the way. The interior of GRUB is fairly simple, with brick walls, concrete elements and an area designed to look like a kitchen. Large steel framed windows allow lots of visibility of the park. The whole vibe of GRUB makes it very industrial (like most hipster cafes), and makes you feel like you are in someone’s studio apartment. All actually done very well I might add.
The whole idea of GRUB’s food is that almost everything is sourced/made from natural ingredients. One of their mottos is to “Eat Responsibility”, you can breathe a sign of relief knowing that the food from GRUB is geared towards healthy. You can have a look at GRUB’s menu here. GRUB has two sections on their menu, one for weekend brunch, one for dinner. Most of their food that they offer for both are quite similar to each other, with only a few dishes being different. You’ll mostly find that GRUB serves burgers. Prices are around mid-range, so it is quite wallet-friendly.
To be dreadfully honest, for all three times I’ve been to GRUB, I’ve yet to figure out what’s all the hype about the place. I don’t really find GRUB’s food to be anything special unfortunately. I keep going back, hoping that perhaps I could be mistaken, but still I’m constantly left with an empty feeling. It’s best responded with a shrug and an “Eh” as my response. Of course, GRUB’s food is not at all horrid, but I don’t see myself going back FOR the food.
Worth A Visit/Revisit?
Overall, I do find some of the food at GRUB to be either a hit or a miss. It’s definitely in a great place with a great surrounding environment, fantastic to hangout or to enjoy a cold beer. This is probably why GRUB keeps the people coming. I do recommend giving GRUB a try, my personal opinion obviously is just my personal opinion. I won’t really go back for the food unfortunately, perhaps only when I’m at a loss for what to eat or if I want to bring friends there who have never been. GRUB does have a great concept, so it definitely garners a visit.
