Aesthetic
Of the three times that I’ve been to GRUB, I’ve only stepped into the interior of GRUB on my third visit. Unless you are lucky or early, you’ll find that GRUB is constantly filled with people and getting a seat on the inside would be quite the task. GRUB utilises the same digital reservation system as Lola’s & Symmetry, so all you need is to key in your particulars and wait for them to contact you when your table is ready. It would usually take around 10-20 minutes to get a table at GRUB, sometimes you would need to share a table with others as well.

The popularity of GRUB seems to come from it’s location. Being situated in the middle of a park, surrounded by lush greenery, GRUB constantly draws a crowd even though it’s location makes it quite out of the way. The interior of GRUB is fairly simple, with brick walls, concrete elements and an area designed to look like a kitchen. Large steel framed windows allow lots of visibility of the park. The whole vibe of GRUB makes it very industrial (like most hipster cafes), and makes you feel like you are in someone’s studio apartment. All actually done very well I might add.

Crispy Fish Burger ($14) Crumbed Fish Fillet, Remoulade One of GRUB's most popular dishes. If you visit GRUB, this is a must to order. I liked the concept of such a big fish fillet in a burger. Aside from that, I found it a bit dry though.

Food
The whole idea of GRUB’s food is that almost everything is sourced/made from natural ingredients. One of their mottos is to “Eat Responsibility”, you can breathe a sign of relief knowing that the food from GRUB is geared towards healthy. You can have a look at GRUB’s menu here. GRUB has two sections on their menu, one for weekend brunch, one for dinner. Most of their food that they offer for both are quite similar to each other, with only a few dishes being different. You’ll mostly find that GRUB serves burgers. Prices are around mid-range, so it is quite wallet-friendly.

To be dreadfully honest, for all three times I’ve been to GRUB, I’ve yet to figure out what’s all the hype about the place. I don’t really find GRUB’s food to be anything special unfortunately. I keep going back, hoping that perhaps I could be mistaken, but still I’m constantly left with an empty feeling. It’s best responded with a shrug and an “Eh” as my response. Of course, GRUB’s food is not at all horrid, but I don’t see myself going back FOR the food.

Truffled Egg Cocotte ($7) Crispy Parma Ham, Toasted Foccacia This was pretty nice. Not bad for a starter.

GRUB Cheeseburger ($13) Minced Beef Patty, Monterey Jack Cheese This was not bad as well. Not the best cheeseburger I've had, but not the worst.

This was not bad as well. Not the best cheeseburger I’ve had, but not the worst. Think the problem is that I don’t like the buns, which could either make or break a burger.

Churros ($9) Dark Chocolate, Tangy Creme Anglaise I do like the dips provided for the churros. However, I did find them to be overly sweet. (And you gotta understand, I'm someone who finds most sweet things just nice for my taste, so when I say it's sweet, it's sweet alright.) The problem was there was too much coated sugar. That, and the sweet dips, made the churros too overwhelming.

Slow Cooked Pork Belly ($16) Mango Sauce, Mash, Cherry Tomato Salsa This was from my second visit to GRUB. Dinner service. I did quite like this dish. Who doesn't like pork belly? It was cooked perfectly.

Sticky Date Cake ($8.50) Burnt Caramel, Hazelnut Gelato, Toasted Almonds This was also quite good. They ran out of Vanilla gelato and so replaced it with Hazelnut.

Stuffed Chicken Roulade ($16) Honeyed Feta, Mash, Rocket, Corn Salsa This was from my third visit to GRUB. My third visit was definitely better than my first two, perhaps because I was already quite used to the place & food. This dish was quite good, though my companion preferred the one at Madame Patisserie. (Review soon)

Grilled Steak & Fries ($19) Grass-fed Ribeye, Watercress, Mustard Sauce I found the portion for this to be quite underwhelming. You can definitely get bigger steaks with a price like that. Overall though, this was fairly good. Cooked to the proper doneness which was medium. It did take quite a while before this was served.

Pork Steak Burger ($13) Sous vide Glazed Pork, Grilled Pineapple I actually ordered this because I felt a tad greedy & also wanted to play around with my DSLR. This was good though, better than the previous two burgers I had at GRUB.

Chocolate Pots ($7) Dark Chocolate Pudding, Spicy Cashew Praline This was good. You can't go wrong with chocolate pudding. The staff mentioned that if you want more spicyness, you could bite the chili provided. (I'm not that crazy to do so)

Dessert of the Week ($7) Hand-made Donuts, Salted Egg Custard Sauce This was their dessert of the week during my third visit. I really loved this, I love anything to do with Salted Egg. The donuts were reminiscent of those fried buns you eat with Chili Crabs.

After your meal at GRUB, you can take a walk around the park to work off the calories and enjoy the scenery.

Worth A Visit/Revisit?
Overall, I do find some of the food at GRUB to be either a hit or a miss. It’s definitely in a great place with a great surrounding environment, fantastic to hangout or to enjoy a cold beer. This is probably why GRUB keeps the people coming. I do recommend giving GRUB a try, my personal opinion obviously is just my personal opinion. I won’t really go back for the food unfortunately, perhaps only when I’m at a loss for what to eat or if I want to bring friends there who have never been. GRUB does have a great concept, so it definitely garners a visit.

  1. I’m extremely impressed together with your writing skills and also with the layout in your blog.
Is this a paid topic or did you customize it yourself?

Anyway keep up the excellent high quality writing, it is rare to look a great weblog like this one these days..

    1. Why thank you so much! I do apologize that it took a while for me to reply. If you’re asking about the layout of the website, it’s actually a free design but I do customize it to a certain extent.
